Our History
Red Herring was founded in 1988 by James Herring, a fashion designer with a passion for creating eclectic, eye-catching pieces. James got his start selling his handmade clothing at local markets in London, where his vibrant prints and playful silhouettes quickly gained a following.
As demand grew, James opened the first Red Herring boutique in Notting Hill. The quirky little shop overflowed with James’ one-of-a-kind creations and attracted celebrities and trendsetters alike. Over the years, Red Herring expanded across the UK and Ireland, bringing James’ artistic vision to high streets nationwide.
In the early 2000s, Red Herring was acquired by British retailer Debenhams plc. Under Debenhams’ wing, our distribution and manufacturing capacity grew exponentially. We were able to share our unique fashion perspective with an even wider audience across the UK and beyond.
Today, Red Herring has over 200 stores and remains committed to James’ founding vision of fusing art, fashion, and self-expression. Our in-house designers carry on his legacy of innovation, keeping Red Herring at the forefront of eclectic British style.
